History of the Office
The Hispanic presence in Northwest Indiana precedes for many years the official establishment of the diocese of Gary on December 17, 1956. More than fifty per cent of the entire Latino population of Indiana lives in the Northwest part of the state, the territory of our diocese. For this reason, the first bishop of the newly erected diocese, bishop Grutka, appointed the "Bishop’s Committee for the Spanish Speaking" as the first step to explore ways to address the needs of the Hispanic Catholic community.
In 1983, the second bishop of the diocese, Most Rev. Norbert Gaughn, officially established the Office of Hispanic Ministry appointing Fr. Fernando De Cristobal as its first director.
During the first years, the Eucharistic Celebration in Spanish began in several Parishes of the diocese, as well as sacramental preparation. With the collaboration of the Jesuits, with Fr. Tom Florek as director, a large number of Small Christian Communities groups (SCC) were formed.
In 1995, the present bishop, Most Rev. Dale J. Melczek, then as Coadjutor Bishop, approved the formation of a Search Committee, under the direction of the chancellor, Fr. Jerry Schweitzer, to hire a new director of the office. Once the national search was completed, Bishop Melczek appointed Angel Torres as director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry on September 1, 1995.
In 2003, Adelina Torres was appointed director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry. The focus of this office is to continue to aid in the integration of the large influx of Hispanic Catholics to our country and our parishes.
In 2016, the ministry was renamed the Office of Intercultural Ministry to better reflect the cross-cultural community we serve.
In 2020, Erica Jimenez was appointed director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry. After Adelina's Retirement
Historia de la Oficina
La presencia de los hispanos en la region del noroeste del estado de Indiana precede por muchos años el establecimiento de la diócesis de Gary el 17 de diciembre de 1956. Más del cincuenta porciento de toda la población de latinoamericanos ubicados en Indiana se encuentran en la parte noroeste del estado, el territorio de nuestra diócesis. Por esta razón, el primer Obispo de la nueva diócesis, el Obispo Grutka, formó la “Comisión del Obispo Para Hispanoablantes” como el primer paso en busca de la manera de identificar y resolver las necesidades de la comunidad católica hispana.
En 1983, el segundo obispo de la diócesis, Su Excelencia, Monseñor Norbert Gaughn, oficialmente fundó la oficina de Ministerios Hispanos nombrando al Padre Fernando de Cristóbal como su primer director.
Durante los primeros años, la Celebración Eucarística en español se inició en varias parroquias de la diócesis, así como la preparación sacramental. Con la colaboración de los Jesuitas, con el Padre Tom Florek de director, muchos grupos de Pequeñas Comunidades Cristianas fueron formados.
En 1995, el Obispo presente, Su Excelencia, Monseñor Dale J. Melczek, que en esos dias era el Obispo Coadjutor, aprobó la formación del Comité Investigador bajo la dirección del Canciller, Padre Jerry Schweitzer, para contratar al Nuevo director de la oficina. Al concluirse la busqueda, el Obispo Melczek nombró a Angel Torres como el Nuevo director de la Oficina de Ministerios Hispanos el 1° de septiembre de 1995.
En 2003, Adelina Torres fue nombrada como directora de la Oficina de Ministerio Hispano. El foco de esta oficina es en continuar a ayudar en la integración de los numerosos Hispanos Catolicos que entran en nuestro pais y en nuestras parroquias.
En 2016, el Ministerio pasó a denominarse Oficina del Ministerio Intercultural para reflejar mejor la comunidad intercultural que servimos.
En 2020, Erica Jimenez fue nombrada como directora de la Oficina de Ministerio Hispano. Despues del retiro de Aledina.
The Office of Intercultural Ministry
The Office of Intercultural Ministry is totally integrated to the diocesan vision:"A community of believers rich in tradition and in diversity", promoting the unity of faith, preserving the richness of Christian values and traditions of the Hispanic people but open and receptive to other cultures, increasing the sense of Catholicity, conscious of the diversity of the Body of Christ.
The aim of the Office of Intercultural Ministry IS NOT to foment a "Parallel Church" within the diocese, nor to be a token ministry to exclusively serve a minority group. The scope of the Office of Intercultural Ministry is to promote the Pastoral de Conjunto (Team work), from fragmentation to coordination at the diocesan level. It’s a resourceful tool to all parishes responding to the pastoral, cultural and other needs of the Latino community. To serve without discrimination and with open spirit, advocating social justice with other community and ecumenical organizations, promoting the unity, understanding and solidarity of all people.
La Oficina de Ministerio Intercultural
La Oficina de Ministerio Intercultural es totalmente integrante a la visión de la diócesis: “Una comunidad de creyentes rica en tradición y en divesidad”…promoviendo la unidad de la fé, preservando la riqueza de los valores cristianos y las tradiciones de la gente hispana, pero abierto y receptivo a otras culturas, aumentando el significado del catolicismo, conciente de la diversidad del Cuerpo de Jesus.
El objetivo de la Oficina de Ministerio Intercultural NO ES para formar una “Iglesia Paralela” dentro de la diócesis, tampoco es un ministerio simbólico para servir exclusivamente a un grupo de minoría. El ámbito de la Oficina de Ministerio Intercultural es el de promover el Pastoral de conjunto de fragmentación a coordinación al nivel de la diócesis. Es un instrumento ingenioso para todas las parroquias respondiendo a las necesidades pastorales, culturales y demas de la comunidad Latina. Para servir sin discriminación y con espíritu abierto, defendiendo la justicia social, y junto con otras organizaciones ecumenicales y de la comunidad, el entendimiento y solidaridad de todos.

My name is Erica Jimenez
Graduated from the Lay Ecclesial Ministry Program in 2017.
I live in the beautiful city of Whiting!
An active member at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in East Chicago; I serve on the Liturgy Committee, am a lector and a Eucharistic minister.
And I am also part of the Spirituality Children of the Mother of God.

Me gradué del Programa del Ministerio Laica Eclesial en el 2017.
Vivo en la hermosa ciudad de Whiting.
Soy miembro activa en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en East Chicago; sirvo en el comité de Liturgia, como proclamadora de la Palabra y ministra de la Eucaristía.
También hago parte de la Espiritualidad de los Hijos de la Madre de Dios.
